Talking of Jesus

Christ's work in each of us - What exactly is God doing?

June 4, 2010

God created humankind – male and female in His image (Genesis 1:27). We are physical, but somehow we are representative of God – we are created to be like Him – in His image. God is spirit. He does not have shape or form that we can see or feel Him. Spirit is likened to the wind (John 3:8), that we cannot see, but it moves across the face of the earth (John 3:8). Perhaps God has ears, eyes, nose, mouth, hands and feet. For humans these are tools whereby we experience the world. These are a means for us to live, work and play in a physical creation. However, given God’s altogether different make-up it would be hard to make God conform to our image, for He lives beyond the physical world.

Perhaps it is more pertinent to think of the semblance of God according to other attributes humans possess and are blessed with.

God made us to have dominion over the whole of the earth (Genesis 1:26-28) – He puts us in charge – like God Himself, who is in charge over the whole universe (Hebrews 1:1) and every living thing and every inanimate object within it.

God made us to have a relationship with Him – to walk and talk with Him in the Garden. Communication, love, companionability – these are attributes we have that we are like God. He made us to love (1 John 4:7-12, John 15:17). He Himself is the epitome of love and loving (1 John 4:7-8).

God gave us a commission – to tend the Garden (Genesis 2:15) – we can put to use our imagination and creative talents. He gave us a heart to appreciate beauty and to play with it, to organize it in terms of shapes, colours, textures, tastes, sounds, smells and structures, to create great diversity and uniqueness in all we do. God is divine creator and we too create.

God is the author of life. He breathed life into us (Genesis 2:7) and we were created to live. God is creating sons and daughters (Romans 8:14) in His image. We have children and in those children – each one of them – is a re-creation of a child in our image and in God’s image – we share this pro-creation with God. We guide our children in wisdom and morals as they grow.

God is creating us in His image, in terms of our spiritual nature as well. We are to conform to the image of the Firstborn – Jesus. “For this is eternal life, to know God and Jesus Christ whom He has sent” (John 17:1-3). Jesus sets us on the path of Spiritual enlightenment and maturity through the in-dwelling of the Holy Spirit, the same Spirit which sustained Him and inspired Him. In our character we develop Godliness, love, true righteousness. We are transformed to be like Christ (Romans 12:2, 2 Corinthians 3:18) and we will follow Him (John 15:24, 12:26, as God’s children (John 1:12) into Heaven, to a home (John 14:1-4) He has prepared for us. We are His workmanship, created in His image and likeness. This is what Christ is creating in us when He calls us to be His disciples and empowers us with His mighty Holy Spirit.

What it means to be Holy

May 28, 2010

Holiness versus Profane and Common

Israel, the first covenant people was meant to discern between the Holy and the profane, or common (defiled). Yes the Israelites were given many rules, laws and ordinances to help them discern what was holy versus what was unclean or common. They themselves, as long as they remained in the Holy Covenant relationship with God, were Holy – so much...

Which one are you?

May 13, 2010
As Jesus died, a number of key people were party to, or witnesses to His death.

To Herod Jesus was a "magician". He was not interested in justice - but hoped Jesus would "perform" for him. Are we like Herod or the crowds who followed Jesus. He fed 5000, but only 120 disciples were gathered on that Pentecost Day when the true followers of Jesus were blessed with the Holy Spirit.

To Pilate He was an enigma. Innocent, yet condemned, Jesus did not defend Himself. Pilate the Governor of Judea was ...

Oneness with God

Be Thou Holy as your Father in Heaven is Holy

To be holy is

  • To belong to God (as opposed to belonging to the world)
  • To live Christ’s life (unspotted by the world)
  • To love and worship God in spirit and in truth
  • To love others and to live a life of love, to be loving as part of our inner nature
  • To do the work of Christ on earth – proclaim His Holy name, and proclaim his gospel of love
  • To be in holy fellowship with God, His Son and His Church
  • To have our name written in the Book...

A Perspective on Healing

December 4, 2009

Jesus came healing the sick and casting out demons. His mind-blowing powers attracted huge followings wherever he went. He was the sensation of his time and forever afterward. No-one before or since has drawn so many people to become followers. The wonderful thing was that Jesus passed on his miraculous powers to his disciples, his followers. John 14:12 “I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these…”

Why I Keep the 7th Day Sabbath.

November 27, 2009

At the beginning of time the earth was without form and it was empty. It was a dark void.

We are told about its transformation in the opening chapters of the Bible. God set about making it habitable for humans, the pinnacle of his creation.

Interestingly, time for humans is marked by the phases of the sun, moon and stars. Thus, time is measured by the interface of light and dark, of shadow and daylight, of ebb and flow - sunrise to sunset - new moon to full moon –summer to winter....

The Gospel of God's Love

The Gospel of God’s Love

John the Baptist came first. His message was this. Repent and be baptized. He was a prophet of God. He was the one “crying in the desert”. “Prepare a path for the Lord.” (Malachi 1:3) His was a message of salvation; of forgiveness for sin (Luke 1:76), because God is merciful. (Luke 1:77) Many people came to hear him and were baptized. He did not tolerate pretensions insisting on true repentance. One cannot appear pious, harbouring evil thoughts, ye...

Speaking the Word in Truth.

October 31, 2009

Xmas is a collection of feel good sentiments, but Jesus story is the real deal.

Who believes that Jesus was born in December? He was not. Who believes that Xmas trees and yule logs represent Christ? They do not. Who believes that Xmas is a time of giving designated by the Father, or the Son? It is not. Who believes that Xmas is holy? It is not.

Jesus said, Mark 7:7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

He was qu...

The Two Camps

October 29, 2009

Theo, an incredibly wealthy man, owned vast tracts of mineral rich land. As time passed people would migrate to his land to take advantage of the mining opportunities. It was a very wealthy country with two main centres which had once been mining camps, but now blossomed into cities, Oreton and Living Springs.

Basically, Living Springs was so named because it was watered by unlimited subterranean artesian basins. The landowner’s son, Manny was the governor. Oreton was in the desert and ...

The Covenant we enter

October 24, 2009
Sin Separates us from God. God has entered covenantal relationships with a number of people across time. He made promises to people. To Abraham-the sign of which was circumcision. To Noah-the sign of which was the rainbow. To the Israelite Nation-the sign of which was also circumcision, and perhaps the keeping of the Sabbath. What is the sign of the covenant he holds with Christians?

God established a covenant with Israel. Moses was the mediator of the covenant. God spoke to Moses and Moses sp...
